I will let the photos tell the story of their sweet ceremony, but I do want to mention something special...  See that little purple Mylar balloon that says "Hugs & Kisses"?  It was tucked away within the canopy during the ceremony, and then Carlos and Lindsey took a few photos with it afterwards.  Lindsey gave that balloon to her grandmother in the hospital about 30 years ago - and it has lasted ever since!  THIRTY YEARS for a balloon to stay blown up!  That is magical to me.  Lindsey takes that balloon with her to all special occasions.  Her grandmother was definitely there with them to celebrate this extra special day!

Congratulations, Carlos & Lindsey! :-)

Stacey & Jack | Rockhaven Bed & Breakfast Elopement in Harpers Ferry https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2020/9/stacey-jack-rockhaven-elopement-in-harpers-ferry-west-virginia-wedding-photographer I was connected with Stacey and Jack through a friend and previous bride, Lynn.  Lynn and her husband, Christian, got married in the garden backyard of their beautiful, historic home in Harpers Ferry a few years ago.  They've now turned their home into Rockhaven Bed & Breakfast, opening their doors to visitors, as well as couples looking for an intimate wedding venue.  Stacey and Jack found Lynn and Christian's place, and then they trusted Lynn's recommendation to consider me as their photographer - and I'm so glad they did!

When I asked Stacey and Jack how they met, they said "in prison"!  They met at work (they both work in a prison), haha.  What a fun conversation starter! :-)  The couple traveled about an hour or so from home to enjoy a stay in Harpers Ferry and have a lovely, mid-week elopement ceremony in the Rockhaven garden.  After they exchanged vows and sealed them with a kiss, we ventured to a nearby trail to take some more photos near a waterfall and along the Shenandoah River (I think we were still along the Shenandoah... but it's possible it was the Potomac at this spot).

To celebrate, Stacey and Jack planned to go kayaking later in the day.  Sounds like a pretty fun way to start a marriage to me!

Congratulations, Stacey & Jack! :-)

Cristina & Kevin | Manassas National Battlefield Park Engagement Photography https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2019/10/cristina-kevin-manassas-national-battlefield-park-engagement-photography-west-virginia I met Cristina about ten years ago, through her sister, Jennifer, with whom I worked at the time.  Cristina is super sweet and fun, and I've enjoyed hanging out with her from time to time over the years at mutual friends' gatherings.  When Cristina asked me to photograph her and her fiance Kevin's engagement session, I was excited - not just to photograph a fun and beautiful couple, but also to catch up with Cristina again!

Cristina and Kevin had *THE* most beautiful day for their engagement session...  Perfect, cool weather and gorgeous, fall colors! (insert heart eyes!)

This was also likely the reason that it felt like every other couple and family was doing a photo session at Manassas National Battlefield Park that day, too! :-)  But you wouldn't know there were tons of people around by looking at the photos and seeing Cristina and Kevin's sweet glances at one another and making each other laugh...

Gunnar | Chemo Grad! https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2019/6/gunnar-chemo-grad-the-gold-hope-project-pediatric-cancer I'm excited to share some very wonderful news...  Remember this little guy, Gunnar?...

He is doing GREAT!!!  :-)  Gunnar's mom, Krissy, contacted me a few months ago to set up a photo session to celebrate that Gunnar is DONE WITH CHEMO!  Gunnar's last chemo treatment was in January 2018, and he had his port removed on July 27, 2018.  Gunnar celebrated one year off of chemo on January 22, 2019 - woohoo!

Gunnar is a little 8-year old warrior... Despite learning disabilities, ADHD, and even a seizure he experienced in March 2019, he does not let ANYTHING stop him!!  This little man was just as chatty during this session as he was during the last one.  He also has no problem telling me if he doesn't like something or doesn't want to do something (pose a certain way), haha...  Gunnar is a smart, opinionated, spirited little guy!

Krissy, her boyfriend, Ryan, and Gunnar came to West Virginia for photos this time.  We had fun taking pictures with Gunnar in the backyard, and then Gunnar enjoyed playing with our dogs for a bit...  I think one of our dogs, Kya, probably enjoyed it more than Gunnar, haha, and she LOVED that he threw the ball to her over and over again (Gunnar - we finally found the tennis ball...  under the tv stand!).  Afterwards, I gave Gunnar Cool Ranch Doritos again to take home, and this time - as promised before - Nacho Cheese Doritos for his sister, as he requested last time!

Gunnar's next MRI will be this July.  Send lots of healthy and happy wishes and vibes his way, so he can continue laughing, playing, and keeping his mom on her toes! :-) <3  If you'd like to follow Gunnar's journey, check for updates on his Caring Bridge webpage

Time for some fun photos of Gunnar celebrating one and a half years off of chemo! :-)

I love this moment - Gunnar just shines with hope and strength!... <3

Important Questions to Ask a Wedding Photographer https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2019/3/important-questions-to-ask-a-wedding-photographer-west-virginia When it comes to planning a wedding, there are so many factors to consider when choosing your vendors....  Do you have a good connection with them?  Are they within your budget?  One of the most important vendors is your wedding photographer - the person who will capture the lasting memories from one of the most important days of your life!  There are probably a ton of questions you have swirling around your mind and you're just hoping you remember to ask everything.  This post will cover a few of the most important questions you should ask any photographer that you're considering hiring for your wedding day...

  • What is his or her preferred style of photography? And what do YOU, as the client, prefer - a more candid, documentary style, or more posed/styled shots?  There is nothing wrong with either choice, but each photographer has his or her own style, and this will help you narrow down your options.  A photographer's style and editing will generally be consistent throughout different clients and sessions.  If you like someone's work, but wish they did something slightly different, go with someone else rather than trying to change the photographer's style, because you'll only end up disappointed.
  • Make sure to view FULL GALLERIES of events and sessions or example wedding albums!  Anyone can post their best photos online in a portfolio, but you want to view full galleries so you get a better idea of what an entire wedding day looks like, and you'll have a good sampling of the types of photos you might receive for your day.

Other information to ask and consider:

  • What is included in the package you're considering purchasing?  Time for photography only?  Digital files?  Prints?  Albums?
  • What is the delivery time frame for images/products [there should ALWAYS be a time frame specified in a contract!]?
  • Does he or she have backup equipment?
  • What is his or her cancellation policy?  For both if you cancel and if an emergency comes up for him or her (does he or she have a back-up photographer/back-up plan?).
  • What are your personal use rights after receiving the images?  May you post them online?  May you print copies for family/friends?  [Note: Most, if not all, professional photographers will NOT allow clients to edit or add filters to any of their images - violating that is copyright infringement.]
  • It's also important to make sure that you click with the photographer you hire - this is one of the people you spend the most time with, so make sure you get along well together!
  • Professional photographers will also be registered as a business, have business insurance, and will provide you with a detailed contract.

The list above should give you a good starting point to have a really thorough conversation with any photographer that you're considering hiring to capture your wedding day.  When it comes down to it, the most important thing is that you shouldn't settle for a wedding photographer...  Find a photographer whose photos you absolutely LOVE, ask lots of questions to make sure you're a good fit, and then hire him or her before someone else snatches him or her up for your date!

Five Reasons to Have a "First Look" https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/10/five-reasons-to-do-a-first-look-west-virginia-wedding-photographer To have a first look or not to have a first look?  Many couples find themselves asking this question.  There is usually one main reason couples don't want to have a first look or think they shouldn't have a first look:  Tradition.  Couples that don't want to have a first look usually think they shouldn't see each other on their wedding day before the eagerly anticipated moment of walking down the aisle.  They think their partner's reaction will be "bigger" or more genuine seeing them walking down the aisle.  The opposite is actually true, and this is the first reason to have a first look!

1. More Genuine Reaction

For some reason, people assume that experiencing a monumental moment in front of a bunch of people (even if it is family and friends) will lead someone to display a perfect, fairytale-like, teary-eyed reaction at the alter.  I hate to burst your bubble, but this isn't always the case.  In fact, many people get too nervous in front of a lot of people to really enjoy the moment and, in turn, their reactions in front of others won't reflect their true feelings of excitement for their partners in that moment.  When it's just the couple off on their own...  the bride slowly walking towards her groom...  the anticipation of seeing each other building...  the moment they lock eyes and embrace...  they forget anyone else is even around and THAT is when life feels like a fairytale and some happy tears might be shared!  These few special minutes together might just turn out to be your favorite moment and memory of the day! <3

2. Ease Nerves

You've likely spent most of the morning or afternoon apart... finishing up last minute details...  putting on make up...  perfecting the hair...  getting into the gown...  adjusting the tie and cuff links...  As the anticipation of finally seeing each other all dressed up after a few hours apart builds, the nerves might set in as the realization that such a huge, life-changing commitment (which will be in front of lots of family and friends) lies just moments ahead of you!  You're excited, but you can't help being nervous, as well.  Having a few minutes alone with your bride or groom before the ceremony is a great way to ease the tension, settle nerves, and be left with only excitement before walking down the aisle!

3. Only Intimate Moment of the Day

The wedding day is all about celebrating the happy newlyweds!  You might not realize it beforehand, but during almost every moment of the day, you'll find yourself surrounded by friends and family.  Your loved ones will want to congratulate you and talk with you and take pictures with you.  This is all very sweet and celebratory; however, it doesn't leave the couple with much alone time.  Having a first look ensures the couple is able to sneak away and have a moment to themselves to soak in the special day!

4. More Time For Photos Earlier

If you decide to have a first look, you can get more of the formal photos done earlier in the day, rather than having to wait until after the ceremony.  If the couple is willing to see each other beforehand, they can take couples photos and bridal party photos earlier, and even take some family portraits earlier too (if some of the family members have arrived early).

5. Get Back to Celebrating Sooner

With more photos taken earlier in the day, you're left with less photos to be taken after the ceremony, and that means you can enjoy cocktail hour with your loved ones and get back to celebrating at the reception sooner!

I highly recommend a "first look" for couples getting married!  Seeing each other during a "first look" before the ceremony is a very special and intimate moment shared with just the couple, and it can help ease some nerves before the ceremony.  I promise...  Doing a "first look" does not make the walk down the aisle any less special!  Additionally, doing a "first look" will also allow for taking more photos before the ceremony, so there are less photos to take after the ceremony, and you can get back to celebrating more quickly!

I'll leave you with a few magical moments from a sweet first look at a recent wedding...

Nick & Regan | Fall Campground Wedding https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/10/nick-regan-fall-campground-wedding-west-virginia-wedding-photographer Nick and Regan are not only wedding clients of mine, but they're friends!  I met them through my husband, Andrew.  Andrew works with Nick, and, more recently, Nick and Regan began coming over to our house for a monthly game day of Dungeons & Dragons with some of our other friends too.  This little detail is important...  It gives you a glimpse into this fun couple's wedding day... ;-)

Nick and Regan got married in the rural town of Louisa, Virginia at Nick's family's campground, Small Country Campground.  The bride and groom got ready in separate rooms of the cozy and historic Manor House, and then we headed outside for their first look.  There were some sweet moments, but there were also some silly moments!

The sillyness didn't end there - there were touches of quirky and "nerdy" all throughout their wedding...  the groomsmen each had custom cuff links including Deadpool, Batman, and Legend of Zelda Triforce, and Nick's cuff links were D&D 20-sided dice!  They also wore novelty socks (like gummy bear and panda bear prints).  The bridesmaids each wore Chuck Taylors and looked stunning in their black and red gowns with bouquets.  Regan wore her Chuck Taylors, too!  During their ceremony, Nick and Regan even rolled the D&D dice to see who would read their vows first!  I see a lot of fun and laughs in these newlyweds' future!

After the heartfelt vows were read, the rings were exchanged, and the marriage was sealed with a kiss, this easy-going couple danced and partied the night away with their family and friends!

Congratulation, Nick & Regan!  See you at the next D&D game! ;-)

Do You Really Need an Engagement Photo Session? https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/7/do-you-really-need-an-engagement-photo-session-west-virginia-wedding-photographer I often hear couples say things like, "Do we REALLY need an engagement session??" ...  "What's the point of an engagement session, we don't need the pictures." ... "We hate having our picture taken, we don't want engagement photos."

It's true - you might not NEED engagement photos in and of themselves, but there are so many benefits to having an engagement session, especially if it's done with your wedding photographer!

  • Trial Run

This is your chance to see how pictures of *you* taken by *your* wedding photographer turn out.  Sure, you've met your photographer, maybe chatted with him or her over coffee, browsed hundreds of his or her photos and you love what you've seen so far.  Having an engagement session will allow you to see actual photos of you guys as a couple captured through the eyes of your photographer.  This will give you a great idea of the style and types of moments your photographer will try to capture on your wedding day.  Hopefully you'll love the photos you receive :-)

But if you don't...  Wouldn't you rather know that before your wedding??  If you're unhappy with your photos, this is your chance to provide feedback to your photographer.  If it's simply that you were uncomfortable with a certain pose or you realize you're more confident with natural moments rather than poses, tell your photographer that!  He or she should be able to accommodate those requests on your wedding day (occasionally, the photographer may also be willing to have another session to ensure you love the results and are more comfortable).

If, on the other hand, you are unhappy with the style of photography (for example, only posing, no natural interaction, etc.) or style of editing, those things likely won't change much and this is your chance to end the relationship with that photographer and find another one before your big day.  It's better to learn all of this after an engagement session rather than waiting until one of the most important days of your life, which can't be re-done if you don't like the final results.

  • Get to Know Your Photographer

Not only does an engagement session give the photographer a chance to see their couples interact and help them feel more comfortable in front of the camera, but it also allows the couple to interact with the photographer and get a feel for how he or she works with and guides a couple throughout the day.

You might have had fun chatting over coffee and photo albums, but if you don't "click" well when taking photos or if the photographer doesn't listen to feedback you're providing, that might not be the right photographer for you.  When spending an hour or two with your photographer for your engagement session feels more like hanging out with an old friend and there are plenty of laughs and smiles, you know you made an excellent decision hiring that photographer!

  • Bonus Photos

Lastly, you might have thought you don't *need* engagement photos, and sure, maybe you don't.  But if the session went well and you love the results, you'll end up with beautiful professional photos of yourselves in a more casual setting (and not many people take advantage of the opportunity to have professional photos taken these days).

You'll have a few lovely photos to frame around the house and even to use for save-the-dates if you decide to send those out to guests :-)

If you're on the fence about having engagement photos taken, I highly recommend going ahead and having the engagement session!  It's better to have had the session and learned from it or not needed it, rather than to look back and wished you had done it in the first place.

Secrets of a Backyard Wedding Bride! https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/6/secrets-of-a-backyard-wedding-bride-west-virginia-wedding-photographer Are you thinking about having a backyard wedding, or do you know someone who is?  My husband, Andrew, and I had a backyard wedding at our home in October 2015.  In this post you'll find the nitty gritty details and all the work it took to make that happen.  A beautiful backyard wedding can be done, but below are some important things to keep in mind when considering or planning a backyard wedding...

  • Cost

A backyard wedding, when properly hosted, probably won't end up being much less expensive than having a wedding at a typical venue.  Many people think having a backyard wedding is automatically a good way to cut costs, but that's not necessarily the case.  By the time you "build" your venue (in your backyard) and rent or buy all essentials for hosting guests, the cost is often around the same amount, if not more, than what it would have cost at a "normal" venue (I'll break down the final cost of our wedding later in this post).

  • Creating "The Venue"
  • When it comes to a backyard wedding, you are responsible for EVERYTHING...  Tent (or other structure), tables, chairs, linens, dinnerware, lighting, generators, bathrooms/restroom trailers, heat (very important depending on the time of year!), fans/air conditioning (also very important!), etc.
  • When planning what spot to have your ceremony and reception, you have to make sure to determine good placement of everything -- You don't want the guests to have to trek really far through a yard or field to get to the restroom, or from the ceremony location to the reception location.  Also, take into account the terrain and bumps (for example, our backyard *looks* relatively flat, but it really had lots of bumps to it!).
  • Make sure there is adequate guest parking available and that it is relatively close to where guests need to walk to for the ceremony and reception.
  • If your wedding is in your backyard, people may want to go inside your house if the ceremony and reception are close by. Make sure you are prepared to deal with that beforehand -- Do you care?  If you don't want people wandering inside, make sure to put a sign or other means up to let guests know this.
  • Have chairs; do not use hay bales as seats.  Many people have allergies to hay or straw, and bales are also very uncomfortable to sit on.  I admit it...  I wanted hay bales as ceremony seating!  But we decided not to use them, and it was a good decision not to.  In addition to the general need for chairs, I recommend getting two sets of chairs:  Ceremony location chairs and reception chairs (unless people are sitting at reception tables to watch the ceremony).  We considered only getting one set of chairs and us/family/friends/guests moving the chairs to the reception location after the ceremony. Ultimately, we decided to get two sets (a less expensive and less fancy set for the ceremony, and nicer, sturdier, white ones for the reception).  I'm glad we got two sets, so we didn't bother guests with that unnecessary burden.
  • The catering company you hire may have to use the kitchen inside your home.  All companies may not, but some might (ours did), so this is something to consider.
  • Get event insurance.  Hosting a large event on your property with a lot of moving parts puts you at risk for a lot of liability.  You can look into your homeowner's insurance as a starting point to see if they have options for wedding event coverage on your property.
  • I highly recommend having nice restroom trailers (not port-a-potties).  Despite having a backyard wedding, guests may be dressed in nice or formal attire and will greatly appreciate having a "normal" restroom facility to use and freshen up in.  To this day, the restroom trailer we had at our wedding is still something our guests rave about!
  • I'm not a proponent of using anyone else's property besides your own for a backyard wedding.  That would put a lot of pressure, stress, and liability on that person, and it's not even his/her event.
  • Vendors
  • I briefly mentioned catering above.  When hosting a backyard wedding, it's your responsibility to find catering and bartending services.  Hire licensed, insured, and reputable vendors.
  • I HIGHLY recommend hiring a day of coordinator!  Our coordinator was definitely one of the most well worth it expenses we had.  Because the wedding will be on your property, you won't want to have to deal with guest questions the day of.  There will be plenty of little things that you know, because it's your home and backyard, but guests will ask questions, so let someone else deal with that for you on your wedding day :-)
  • Some couples may consider just using an iPod or other sound system for announcements and reception music.  We initially considered that too.  Ultimately, we decided we didn't want the hassle of handling the music and we didn't want to worry about a sound system malfunctioning, so we hired a DJ who gave us an excellent deal for JUST playing music (he did end up emceeing a little, but we hired him solely to play music and make sure the music flowed and didn't run into any issues).
  • As with catering, make sure all the other vendors you hire (photographer, DJ, coordinator, officiant, etc.) are licensed and insured.  Professionals in the wedding industry will always be appropriately licensed and insured, so make sure you hire professionals, so there leaves no doubt you and they are covered if something happens during your wedding.
  • So how much does a backyard wedding really cost?

Below are some of the main expenses for our backyard wedding:

  • Tent, Tent Sides, Heat, Lights, Extension Cords = $1,973.08
  • White Chairs, Tan Chairs, Tables, Generators, Grill, Coffee Urn (60-cup) = $768.90
  • Restroom Trailer (nice restrooms, not port-a-potties) = $1,121
  • Day-of Coordinator (and she gave us a steal of a deal!) = $360

Just those few expenses above came to over $4,300. That doesn't include ANY decor or any other vendors (photographer, DJ, caterer, etc.).

  • Catering was $4,685. Alcohol is not included in that catering cost.

All said and done, our backyard wedding including every last detail came to $21,161.77.  We had 90 guests (11 of which were kids).

A backyard wedding is definitely possible, and I don't know how much more stressful a backyard wedding is compared to a venue wedding, because Andrew and I started planning a backyard from the beginning.  Just remember that there are a LOT of details you are responsible for, since you're building it from the ground up.  Backyard weddings are completely doable and can be beautiful, but they are by no means less expensive.  If you're considering having a backyard wedding, start planning early, save up for it (don't expect it to be a "cheap" wedding), and stay organized so you can be sure to have the best backyard wedding ever! :-)

Rachel Langerhans Photography - 2017 Year In Review https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/1/rachel-langerhans-photography---2017-year-in-review It's already 8 days into 2018 and I'm only just now getting a chance to write a recap post about 2017!  My goal in the beginning of 2017 was to photograph even more sessions and events, mainly weddings and engagements, but that changed about halfway through the year...  In June 2017, Andrew and I found out we were pregnant - Yay! :)  I knew that I could continue photographing for at least a few months, but I didn't want to book any weddings in the early 2018 timeframe, so I put marketing and pursuing wedding clients on hold for the time being.  I was still happy and eager to do engagements and other small sessions, so that's what most of my year consisted of.  Additionally, I was accepted as a volunteer photographer for The Gold Hope Project, which provides free portrait sessions for pediatric cancer patients to bring awareness to childhood cancer and provide funding for a cure <3

In 2017, I was not only blessed to get pregnant, but fortunate to photograph...

1 wedding

2 headshot sessions

6 engagement sessions

1 family session

1 Gold Hope Project session

1 cross country roadtrip of a lifetime!

Although 2017 wasn't as busy with weddings and photo sessions as I initially hoped it would be, I know 2018 will make up for that...  Even though it may be "busy" in a completely different way -- having a BABY (and, of course, taking lots of photos of my very own precious little one)!!!  I plan to take some time off in early 2018 and get back into photography for clients in late spring.

My goal for 2018 is first and foremost to bring a happy and healthy baby into the world, and hopefully for Andrew and I to get the hang of parenting our little girl somewhat quickly!  I have one wedding booked for September, and I look forward to meeting many more couples and families throughout the year!

Below is a review of Rachel Langerhans Photography in 2017...  And also a few favorite moments from my personal life ;-)

Happy New Year!  I'm looking forward to many new adventures ahead! :-)

Gunnar | 6 Years Old https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/12/gunnar-6-years-old-the-gold-hope-project-pediatric-cancer I applied to be a volunteer photographer for The Gold Hope Project in April 2017 and was accepted in July 2017.  As sad as it is thinking about such tiny humans fighting such big and scary illnesses, I wanted to be a part of something fun for the kids and something that would create a lasting memory for the family of the fighters.

One of my first requests for a fighter session came in September 2017.  Gunnar is a little 6-year old boy (7-years old, by the time this blog is posted) who was diagnosed with brain tumors in June 2016, after experiencing many headaches.  Reading what his mom wrote about him in her fighter session request was so very touching...  Gunnar loves making people laugh.  He likes playing outside, playing Xbox, and watching YouTube. He also loves playing with his trucks.  For a little boy (or anyone really) with three brain tumors and one tumor in his back, you'd expect that frequent treatments including MRIs, scans, x-rays, surgery, and chemotherapy would completely exhaust him.  Although it tires him out, his strength amazes his mom, Krissy, every day.  She says he almost always has a smile on his face and he loves to be goofy.  "He is my little hero!"

I couldn't wait to meet this little man!  I asked Krissy what some of Gunnar's favorite things are...  I was excited to surprise him with some treats on the day of his session.  When I pulled into their driveway on a sunny Sunday afternoon, Gunnar came running out as I was gathering up my photography gear to take inside.  He eagerly asked what he could help with (such a sweet kid!).  He immediately began telling me about his port that had been put in his chest and how his voice might be a little scratchy or hard to understand.  How confident is this boy, to announce that right away to a stranger!  I handed him a bag of balloons and he ushered me inside.

From the moment we got inside, Gunnar's energy was obvious (and seemingly endless!).  I told him I had a couple surprises for him, and then I handed him the remote control monster truck and a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos, his favorite.  He was excited for the truck (it was a pretty fun truck, if I do say so myself), but he gave me some feedback on the chips...  "Next time, can you bring the red bag too??"  He said his sister likes the Nacho Cheese flavor.  What a thoughtful brother!  I promised I'd bring the red bag, too, next time.

Gunnar played with the car for a little bit (he's much better at steering it than I am!) and then he bounced the gold balloons around inside for a while.  He preferred the balloons stay inside, so they wouldn't blow away outside, haha.  Then we went out into their backyard where Gunnar could run around and play and show off for the camera.  As tricky as it was at times to catch Gunnar in action as he ran around, I am SO glad he was in such good spirits and was having a blast.  He has more energy than I can ever imagine having, and it's incredible that he's able to maintain the happiness and positive energy that he exudes.

After playing outside for a while, we all went inside to play some games (Gunnar had to teach me how to play some board games and handheld video games...  I'm way behind in modern games!).  While Gunnar was upstairs getting more toys, I asked his mom how she would best describe Gunnar.  "He's so loving...  He's the most affectionate person I know."  And you can definitely see that love and affection shine through in his personality.  There were a lot of fun moments during Gunnar's session, but my absolute favorite moment that I caught was a shared laugh between him and his mom while playing outside...  A moment of joy, lightheartedness, and love...

Here's a glimpse into this amazing, strong, and inspiring little man.  You're my hero too, Gunnar! <3

You're Engaged! Now What?? https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/12/youre-engaged-now-what-west-virginia-engagement-wedding-planning-photographer Congratulations on your engagement!  This is such an exciting time :-)  Once you start wedding planning, it will be a whirlwind, so definitely take a few days or weeks to simply enjoy the feeling of being engaged...  and possibly having a new ring on your finger?! ;-)

  • Budget

Once you feel ready to take on the task of wedding planning, start with figuring out a budget for you and your future spouse.  Take a look at your regular monthly income and expenses, and see where you can save a little each month to set aside money specifically for your wedding.  Once you figure out you can save X dollars each month for X months, that's your budget!  For example, if you can set aside $300 each month and you plan a two year engagement, you'll have $7,200 for your wedding budget.  That will give you a starting point for how many people you can invite, based on your feasible budget.  The cost of wedding expenses varies based on location throughout the country, so keep that in mind and try not to compare your budget with someone else's, who may be planning in an area with very different costs.

  • Guest List

Make a tentative guest list of all the people you'd like to invite with your significant other.  The number of people on this list will be important when deciding on a venue, when it comes to the capacity of the venue and price per person.  Also check with the people you care most about being able to attend your wedding, to ensure they are available on dates you're considering, as well as traveling to your wedding location (if planning an out of town wedding).

After you figure out what you can afford for your wedding budget and have a realistic guest list, look into the "big ticket" vendors...

  • Venue

Start with the venue - decide where you'd like to get married.  You need a venue before you can actually set a date.  Questions to consider about the venue...

  • How many people can the venue accommodate?
  • Where are the ceremony and reception locations...  Are they in the same place?  Are they far apart?
  • Will the wedding be outdoors [take into account the time of year and weather]?  If outdoors, is there a backup plan?
  • What is included in the venue pricing?  Is catering included?  Tables, linens, chairs?  Decor?
  • How many hours would be included in your venue package?  Is there a possibility anyone else will be having an event the same day/time?
  • What are the terms of the contract?  Read the contract carefully, including cancellation terms, before signing!
  • If you're having an outdoor or backyard wedding, your "venue" will be become a bit more complicated with tent and equipment rentals, as well as building everything from the ground up - start planning early!

  • Officiant

Once you have a venue set, you have a date, and then you can look for someone to officiate your wedding.  The most important thing (and pretty much the only thing) you need to actually get married is an officiant.

  • Is the officiant licensed to marry you in your city/state?

  • Catering

If your venue doesn't provide in-house catering (or if you want to and are allowed to hire an outside caterer), you'll need to search for a caterer.  Ask family and friends for recommendations on caterers they've used that had delicious food!  Or search online in your area for the type of food you're looking to have at your wedding and then set up some tastings - Mmm!

  • Photographer

Obviously I'm a little biased ;-) but I think photography is one of the most important wedding vendors and expenses.  Great photographers get booked early - months (or years) in advance!  Search online for photographers in your area and ask family and friends if they have recommendations for photographers they love, and then start reaching out to some of them whose work you love.

  • What is your preferred style of photography?  Do you prefer a more candid, documentary style?  Or do you prefer a photographer who does more posed/styled shots?  There is nothing wrong with either choice, but each photographer has his or her own style, and this will help you narrow down your options.
  • Make sure to view FULL GALLERIES of events and sessions!  Anyone can post their best photos online in a portfolio, but you want to view full galleries so you get a better idea of what an entire event or session looks like, and you'll have a good sampling of the types of photos you might receive for your day.
  • Videographer

A videographer is often an optional splurge, but if you can afford to have videography in addition to photography, I highly recommend it!  It's such a different way of re-living your wedding day than looking through photos :-)  Videographers may also get booked far in advance, so start researching early.

  • DJ/Musician

Great DJs and musicians also get booked far in advance, so start searching and asking for recommendations early.  A DJ can make or break a reception, so choose one who you trust to keep the celebration going for hours!

  • Wedding Planner/Coordinator

There are different kinds of wedding planners and coordinators.  Some venues will have a coordinator designated for your wedding, which is a nice bonus.  If you're looking for a planner or coordinator outside of your venue, you'll usually have a few different options:  Full planning, partial or month-of planning, or day-of coordination.  Your wedding budget may largely determine if and what planning/coordination service you choose to have, but if you can afford it, I would highly recommend a day-of coordinator (if your venue doesn't already provide one)!  A day-of coordinator will allow you to relax and let someone else deal with stress and last minute questions and issues that might arise.

  • Dress Shopping

So many brides want to go out and immediately start dress shopping as a way to celebrate being engaged.  There is nothing wrong with wanting to try on some gowns and have that glowing bride feeling, but don't commit to a dress right away.  Aside from the fact that there may be more important areas you'd like to set money aside for in the beginning, you don't want to end up with "dress regret".  Some brides buy a dress that they LOVE right away, but then a few months later they're questioning their decision - ugh!  Go dress shopping and enjoy it!  Take a few trips to different places with different styles and be sure to find a dress you truly love!

  • Begin wedding dress shopping about 8-12 months before your wedding date.
  • Visit numerous bridal shops.
  • Try on various styles - including styles you might *think* you don't like or don't want!
  • Choose a dress that makes you feel BEAUTIFUL!  Even if it's not the one you initially pictured or the one your family or friends like best, all that matters is that it makes YOU feel like the most beautiful bride! :-)
  • Once you buy your dress, STOP LOOKING at other dresses!  Go back and look at pictures of *your* dress from when you tried it on or when you were at your fittings and reminisce about why you love it, but do not look at other dresses.

  • Florist

If you decide to have floral arrangements for your wedding, start looking at florists in your area.

  • Decide what arrangements you want - Bridal bouquet?  Bridesmaids bouquets?  Mother of the bride and Mother of the groom corsages?  Boutonnieres?  Table centerpieces?  Florals lining the ceremony aisles?  Florals on the arbor?
  • Consider various florist options available, to include grocery stores, warehouse stores and farmers markets, for less expensive options.
  • Consider artificial flowers if you want any of the florals as keepsakes - but keep in mind that realistic and beautiful artificial flowers will likely not be much (if any) less expensive than real flowers.

  • Cake/Bakery

Dessert! Sometimes the highlight of a wedding reception for guests, and sometimes the most fun part of planning for a couple :-)

  • Decide what you want for your wedding dessert at the reception - Cake?  Cupcakes?  Ice cream?  A candy bar?  The options these days are endless!
  • Consider having a "display cake" - a more extravagant cake for the newlyweds to cut - and another (but still delicious) cake option for the guests.
  • Consider various bakery options available, to include grocery stores and warehouse stores, for less expensive (but still delicious!) options, such as sheet cakes.

  • Hair & Makeup

Some brides insist on doing their own hair and/or makeup for their wedding day.  If you have an excellent hand at doing formal hair and makeup to begin with and you don't mind the added stress of the day, then go for it.  This is one area though that's nice to be pampered with on your big day, especially after all the hecticness and stress leading up to it.

  • It's important to remember that wedding makeup should be applied a little heavier than day-to-day make up, in order to make your wedding day glow shine even more in photos :-)
  • Don't forget to do trials for both hair and makeup!  You want to be sure you LOVE your hair and makeup artists' styles before you walk down the aisle.

  • Accommodations (Hotel, Transportation, etc.)

Is your wedding out of town for a lot of guests?  Don't forget to make a room block at a nearby hotel for guests to stay at.  Some hotels will also provide a discounted rate for those booking under the room block.  How far away from the hotel from your venue?  Consider booking a shuttle for your guests so they don't have to worry about getting to and from the venue, especially if they've had some drinks to celebrate.  If you're not providing transportation, have the names and phone numbers of some local taxi companies available for guests to call if needed.

  • Bridal/Wedding Party

A bridal party obviously isn't a vendor you need to book, but it's an important topic I wanted to mention because it's another area couples can get caught up in in the early stages of wedding planning.  Try to remember that you do not *need* a bridal party.  It's perfectly possible and acceptable to get married with just the two of you standing at the alter and an officiant pronouncing you as newlyweds!  I'll let you in on a little secret...  Not everyone even likes being in weddings!  Not having a bridal party doesn't mean your family and friends don't mean the world to you; it just means they get to attend as beloved guests and don't have the added stress that often comes with being in a wedding party.  If you do choose to have a bridal party, pick just a few people you really cannot imagine not standing at the alter with you.  Oftentimes, as soon as a couple gets engaged, they want to share the news with everyone and are eager to ask their closest friends to be bridesmaids or groomsmen.  I highly recommend not asking anyone to be in your bridal party until about 6-8 months before the wedding.  Sometimes friendships and relationships change.  I've heard many times that a bride and bridesmaid or maid of honor had a falling out and now the bride doesn't want that person in the wedding.  It can make for some very uncomfortable situations (and once you ask someone to be in your wedding, you cannot un-ask them without damaging the relationship for good).  Bottom line - Don't feel obligated to ask all (or any) of your "close" friends or family members, and don't worry if the numbers on each side of the wedding party aren't even - that's okay!  The only people in the bridal party that are needed are the couple themselves :-)

  • All the details!

Some of the most important and fastest booking wedding vendors are listed above, but there are a LOT more things to remember for your budget and to do when planning your wedding.  Here are some other things to keep in mind as you plan...

  • Rings.  Don't forget to talk about what each of you would like in your wedding bands and include both ring costs in your budget.
  • Tuxedo.  A bridal gown will definitely not be overlooked when planning ;-) but don't forget that if there is a groom involved, include his tuxedo in your budget.
  • Equipment rentals (photobooth, lighting options, etc.).  Keep track of extra, optional rentals that would be nice to have, so you can later determine if you have enough to splurge on them.
  • Save the dates and invitations.  Save the dates aren't required, so you can save a bit of money by not sending those.  Depending on how fancy you go, invitations can get quite expensive.  Try looking at sites like Vistaprint, Zazzle, and Basic Invite (you can save 30% and get free shipping on BasicInvite.com if you use my name - RACHELLANGERHANS - as a promo code)!
  • Stamps and postage for invitations are also often forgotten when budgeting.
  • Tips.  Tips for services quickly add up!  And it's one of those little things couples often forget to include in their budget, so start stashing away some cash in envelopes ahead of time (and then give the tips to your coordinator or a trusted family member to hand out on your wedding night).
  • Favors.  Favors also aren't necessary.  Many people aren't fans of personalized favors (for example, with the name of the couple and date of the wedding) and leave those items behind, so it's often a waste of money.  If you want to do favors, consider something edible - who doesn't like a sweet treat to take with them?! :-)
  • Decorations and small details.  You might think going out and buying a few doilies here or a few candles there won't hurt, but it definitely adds up!  Try to include a "miscellaneous" category ahead of time for all the (unexpected) little things you'll buy along the way.

Woo! That was a LOT of information, wasn't it?! Although I tried to make the list above as comprehensive as possible, it's by no means all-inclusive.  There will always be things that pop up during wedding planning, and there will also be some vendors that are more important than other vendors for each couple.  What you choose to set as priorities for your wedding will be unique to you and your significant other.  The most important thing is that you communicate as a couple, set your budget for something you can realistically achieve, and then plan the most beautiful wedding that is true to both of you and your love for one another!  And don't forget to enjoy being engaged for a little, before jumping full speed into wedding planning! ;-)

Do you have other helpful suggestions for wedding planning?  What are some must-have vendors and wedding items for you?  Feel free to comment and share so other brides and grooms can learn from your experience as well!  Do you need more help with wedding planning?  Feel free to send me a message to chat more - I love talking about wedding plans! :-)

Congratulations on your engagement, brides and grooms!  Happy wedding planning! :-)

Anisa & Kent | Shenandoah River State Park Engagement Photography https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/anisa-kent-shenandoah-river-state-park-engagement-photography-west-virginia-wedding This couple is just too cute for words!  Anisa contacted me at the end of October.  Her admiration for my photos and excitement for hiring me as their engagement photographer was such an honor!   Plus...  Anisa and Kent both graduated from Penn State (We are!)!  I actually thought this potential client seemed too good to be true, haha.  I found out from talking with Kent on the phone that they got engaged just a few days before Anisa had contacted me, so they are very much enjoying newly-engaged bliss :-)  Anisa had asked about an engagement session at Shenandoah River State Park (where Kent proposed!) the first weekend in November, and luckily we were able to fit it in to both of our schedules for Sunday the 5th.  I was driving back to West Virginia from being out of town that weekend and the weather in Virginia didn't look like it would be so great, but Anisa and Kent were troopers and still wanted to do their session that day.  I'm SO glad we did for a number of reasons...  The weather turned out to be much nicer than expected!  We also found out upon arriving at the park that it would be closing at 4:30pm that day and would be closed for the next few days (so re-scheduling for later that week wasn't an option!).  Thankfully we had the time change on our side, so we had already planned for their session to be from 3:15pm - 4:15pm - perfect!  I know I often say new photo shoot locations are some of my favorites, and it's true, but this one really is at the top of the list!  The view of the Shenandoah River from up above is just breathtaking!

Anisa and Kent brought their adorable little dog, Jack, with them :-)  We were able to get him in a few photos before venturing off with just the couple.  While walking and chatting a bit more, I found out that Anisa and Kent met in sixth grade math class.  Kent didn't have the grade or class memorized, but Anisa was absolutely certain of it!  Hey, us girls remember those important details ;-)  How sweet that their love story goes that far back!

These two are planning a ceremony in Pennsylvania and a reception in New York.  I imagine their wedding will be beautiful!  While they plan their dream wedding, they'll have these sweet moments spent in beautiful Shenandoah Valley to look back on and remember their engagement...

Bailie & Cameron | Sharpsburg Engagement Photography https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/bailie-cameron-sharpsburg-engagement-photography-maryland-harpers-ferry Bailie and Chris are another sweet couple that I met at the Winchester Bridal Expo this past August.  I remember chatting with Bailie and asking about their wedding and how they met.  They're actually planning a wedding in Wyoming!  They met during their college years while rock climbing - how cool!  I had told Bailie how my husband and I were just on a cross country roadtrip in July and Wyoming was one of our favorite states :-)

When it came time for engagement photos, Bailie and Cameron originally wanted to have photos taken in Harpers Ferry, WV.  I don't know how I didn't know this before, but I learned that a permit is needed each and every time a photo session is done in a national park - boo.  So in order for the couple to save on that cost, they decided to have photos taken in nearby Sharpsburg, MD.  And you'd never know the difference...  Sharpsburg is right down the road and has just as beautiful of scenery!

The sun was shining through the leaves just before sunset and the colors reflecting throughout the trees and leaves were gorgeous and warm and cozy!  I don't know which of the many elements of their photo shoot I liked the best...  Bailie's beautiful and chic look with braided hair and stunning lipstick, her vintage engagement ring (and the fact that she also has another special ring - the one Cameron actually proposed with), or how the perfect light of golden hour surrounded them!

I can't pick a favorite, so here are a bunch from their session!...

Amanda & Chris | Blandy Farm Engagement Photography https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/10/amanda-chris-blandy-farm-engagement-photography-boyce-winchester-west-virginia I met Amanda and Chris at the Winchester Bridal Expo this past August.  They stopped by my booth to chat, filled out an entry form for a discounted engagement session, and were selected as one of the winners!  They decided on Blandy Farm -- one of my favorite places to photograph! -- as the location for their session.

It was a slightly grey day, but this couple's silly banter and happiness brightened the day and made for a fun hour.  Despite the fact that Amanda insists they aren't a lovey dovey, walk arm-in-arm couple, my usual "hold hands"... "now kiss"...  "tell her a joke"... and other similar directions *still* made for sweet moments and beautiful photos!

I just love this couple's goofiness and ease of being together :)  Okay, now for the fun stuff - pictures!  (So many *heart eyes* for Amanda's ring photos...  The flowers at Blandy Farm just made her beautiful ring sparkle even more!)

I just have to point out how super excited Amanda was to sneak in a flirty grab! ;-) ^

Why Is Wedding Photography So Expensive?? https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/8/why-is-wedding-photography-so-expensive-west-virginia-photographer The cost of wedding photography...  This is a hot topic and I know it's listed on my FAQs & Advice page, but I wanted to go into a little more detail to help give those planning a wedding more insight and understanding into why wedding photography costs what it does...

I've mentioned before that I didn't realize how much wedding photography cost until Andrew and I started planning our own wedding.  I have always LOVED photography (obviously!), and wedding photos are important to me, so I knew I didn't want to skimp on that aspect of our wedding.  And now that I'm a wedding photographer, boy do I understand why it costs "so much"!

When it comes to wedding planning, you should first talk with your significant other about each of your expectations, what each of you wants for your wedding and what your "must-haves" are, and what you can budget in the set amount of time you have to plan. Once you figure out how much you can save, then you can figure out how much to spend in each area (photography, catering, DJ, etc.).  Also, be aware that the cost of photography will vary based on location, what's included in the package, experience/skill level of the photographer, etc.

I, of course, hope you'll decide to invest in your wedding day photos :-) Photography is often one of a couple's biggest "splurges" for their wedding, and with good reason -- photos are one of the only things you have (besides a spouse!) after the wedding is over.  Some people think, "But why does it cost $3,000 for 'only' 8 hours of photography?!"  I can assure you -- you are not paying for "only 8 hours of photography"!

Wedding photography service starts with the first email or phone call we receive from you, the client.  We regularly spend numerous hours checking and responding to emails and phone calls, answering questions, addressing issues, meeting in person, visiting the venue, and discussing and planning a wedding day timeline with you...  And that's all before a single photo is taken!  Then we schedule and take engagement photos, and then we edit those engagement photos.  Generally, for every 1 hour of photography, a photographer spends anywhere from 1 hour to 5 hours culling (narrowing down) and editing photos.  That means if you had a 1 hour engagement session, the photographer is spending an additional 1-5 hours working on your photos and providing you service.  Then, of course, there is the actual wedding day photography.  Whether you hired your photographer for 2 hours or 10 hours, your photographer will likely show up an hour or two beforehand to scope out the venue the day-of and take some pre-wedding photos.  During your wedding day, the photographer often serves as coordinator, to an extent.  He or she has to keep the timeline as on schedule as possible (to ensure you get all the photos you requested), round up family and friends for photos, and coordinate with the venue coordinator or day-of coordinator and with the DJ.  The photographer is often the person you spend the most time with on your wedding day; he or she is usually there before the wedding starts and often stays until the wedding is over.  After the wedding is over, the photographer still has endless hours of work ahead of him or her culling and editing photos.  As an example, I often spend about 40 hours editing an 8 hour wedding.  I'm on the longer end of the editing timeframe, since the perfectionist in me wants to make the photos as absolutely perfect as possible for my clients!  If you'll be viewing your photos for the first time with your photographer (to choose favorites for an album or order prints and products), your photographer will spend another few hours scheduling that and sitting down with you to go through your images.  Additionally, if a client opted for a wedding album with his or her package, the photographer then spends another few hours creating and designing an album.

  • Business Expenses

Woo!  So that's the breakdown of the physical photography services and where the cost goes...  But that's not all!  Photographer's also have expenses to run their businesses.  There are equipment expenses -- tens of thousand of dollars worth of professional equipment!  That includes multiple cameras, lenses, flashes, memory cards, and more.  There are also insurance expenses, both equipment insurance and liability insurance (many venues require vendors to have liability insurance, and it's definitely something you want your vendors to have).  Additionally, there are often business registration and certificate expenses a photographer must pay to his or her state and/or city each year just to operate the business.  Lastly, taxes.  Everyone has to (and hates to) pay taxes, but most people are used to taxes coming directly out of their paychecks.  Photographers have to set aside money to pay federal and state taxes at the end of each year, plus local taxes throughout the year.  Approximately 30-40% of what you pay a photographer will disappear to taxes.

  • Putting it in Perspective

Let's say you hire a photographer and choose a package that has 8 hours of wedding day photography and 1 hour of engagement photography for $3,000.  Let's say there is a total of about 4 hours spent emailing, calling, meeting in person, and checking out the venue together.  Then let's estimate the photographer spends 4 hours culling and editing your engagement photos and 32 hours culling and editing your wedding photos.  $3,000 / 49 hours of work = $61.22/hour.  Taking away 40% of that for taxes leaves the photographer with an hourly "rate" of $36.73 (and that's before deducting business expenses).

I hope that realizing a photographer's "take-home pay" for an "8 hour day" plus 1 hour for an engagement session is closer to $330 takes the sticker shock out of seeing the initial $3,000 cost.  If you focus mostly on price and look solely for a "cheap" photographer, the service and photos you receive will often reflect that.  I've never heard a couple say they regret investing a lot in wedding photography, but, unfortunately, I see all too often that a couple regrets not investing more in wedding photography.

There is so much more that goes into photography services than just the hours during your wedding.  A great photographer will put in the extra effort to provide superior customer service throughout the entire wedding planning process, to ensure you have the best and most memorable wedding experience possible!  Beautiful wedding photos and lasting memories truly are priceless!

Kaila & Matt | Shenandoah Junction Engagement Photography https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/6/kaila-matt-shenandoah-junction-engagement-photography-west-virginia-wedding-photography Another gorgeous farm engagement session, woohoo!!  :-)

I met Kaila at Harpers Ferry Event Barn's wedding expo in March, and she was one of the lucky couples who won a discounted engagement session!  She responded to my email quickly and let me know that although they had just recently booked a wedding photographer, they would love to do an engagement session - yay!

For their engagement session, I visited Kaila and Matt at Kaila's family's farm in Shenandoah Junction a little before sunset.  I actually wasn't sure that I had arrived at the right place...  I had to drive wayyyyyy down a gravel road towards the farmhouse at the end of the road.  I arrived a little early, so I admired the serene view and took a few photos while waiting.

I'm not sure who was more excited for the engagement session...  Kaila and Matt or Kaila's family, haha.  The family, who was relaxing outside and enjoying the peaceful evening, knew right away a few poses they wanted to see the soon-to-be bride and groom in...  "Can we get one of them re-creating this picture of my parents standing right here near the porch??" asked Kaila's step-father.  "Get some by the tree!" suggested Kaila's mom.  I knew right away this was going to be a fun evening full of laughs :-)

We wandered the property taking photos of the sweet couple walking along the gravel road and holding hands...  next to the tractors...  by the silos...  walking by different barns and farm structures...  near so many different tall and pretty trees... across the private property section of their railroad tracks...  they even ventured through the cow fields risking stepping in manure to get some pretty beautiful photos!  We ended the session with a few photos of the Kaila and Matt with their precious daughter, Maddy, and even their dog, Turbo, was well behaved and actually wanted to be in some of the photos!

Matt became a pro at my directions, he learned the "routine" very quickly -- "Okay, look at me... now look at each other... now Matt you look at me and Kaila you look at Matt...  now Kaila you look at me and Matt you look at Kaila...  now Matt tell her a joke!..."  They were so fun to hang out with and they are so adorable together.  When a guy can make a girl smile and laugh like *this*, he's a keeper! ;-)

The photo on the left is Kaila's step-father's parents.  The photo is from their wedding day on June 14, 1954 -- almost 63 years to the day of Kaila and Matt's engagement session.  They're posing on the front steps of the farmhouse.  The photo on the right is Matt and Kayla re-creating that moment, at the request of her step-father :-)  It's so neat to see different generations at the same spot!

And now for the rest of these photos full of smiles and laughs of this cute little family... :-)

Family Fun at Ball's Bluff Park! https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/6/family-fun-at-balls-bluff-battlefield-regional-park-west-virginia-family-photographer I love repeat clients! :-)  It's what makes me feel like people really do love my work!  Carrie, whose wedding to Stephen I photographed last June, contacted me in May to set up a family photo session.  They wanted family photos at a nearby park, plus a few extra photos of Stephen with his guitar - he's a musician!  I was excited to explore a new park and see this quirky and fun family again.  While waiting inside their home until it was time to go to the park, I noticed two enormous canvas prints on their walls from their wedding - photos that I took!  That was an ecstatic feeling I can't quite describe, I felt truly accomplished as a photographer :-)

Okay, onto the real point of this post - the family session.  When we pulled into Ball's Bluff Park and got out of our cars, Carrie said, "Now it's only a four mile hike to the spot."  I briefly hesitated, but then figured, alright, let's do it.  Then I realized she was kidding and played along by saying "Well, hey, I have on comfortable sneakers, but if you can do it in those heels, let's go!"  (Check out Carrie's sassy and chic red heels below!)  Anyway, we didn't have to walk very far to find a beautiful spot in the park.

Can we just acknowledge how storybook perfect this family looks?!  They look they belong in the stock photo of a picture frame!  They are THAT good looking!  And what's even better than that is how FUN they are!  They are happy and goofy and have no problem being silly with one another...  You can only be yourself like that with family you love :-)  Thanks for a fun evening, Carrie, Stephen, Carolynn, and Alex!

And last but not least...  Their adorable dog, Bentley!  He was originally going to be a part of the photo shoot, but at the last minute, they decided not to include him.  I'm glad I snapped this quick photo before the session started, so the pup is still technically a part of this session - he's too cute!!

The Barn at York Hill | West Virginia Wedding Venue https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/5/the-barn-at-york-hill-west-virginia-wedding-venue A little over a week ago, VAWE Network and I hosted a free engagement "mini" session event at The Barn at York Hill in Shenandoah Junction, WV. I was super excited to get to see a new (to me) wedding venue - especially a charming barn in the country! :-)  In addition to getting to meet two engaged couples and take a few photos for them, I also got to chat with Gordon and Cornelia Hockman, who are the welcoming and kind venue owners.  Gordon was outside when I arrived and after welcoming Didi (founder of VAWE Network), Renee (owner of and event planner for RCK Weddings & Design), and me, he ventured off to go work around the barn. After saying hello to Cornelia and chatting with the ladies inside the cozy farmhouse for a few minutes, I snuck outside to take some photos...  There were so many magnificent spots around the property... This venue is a wedding photographer's dream, if you're drawn to rustic locations with gorgeous greenery and stunning landscapes (that's the perfect place for me!).

There's a fire pit with spacious seating to roast s'mores during the chilly evenings.  Near the fire pit is a tiny, old log cabin that turns into a bar for guests to grab a drink at during a wedding reception.  Of course, there's the beautiful barn that's been renovated and has stunning chandeliers inside.  There's even an airplane stored near the barn, just waiting for guests to pose with it.  Surrounding the property are vineyards and orchards and pumpkin patches!!  This place is probably heaven in the fall, with idyllic autumn landscapes everywhere :-)  There are so many pretty places to sneak away to for photos, and I imagine this place is even more lovely at sunset!

I'm glad I was able to wander off on my own and take photos before the couples arrived...  I always take LOTS of pictures... Is that a surprise though? ;-)  That gave me some ideas for where to take the twosomes.  After the mini sessions were over, I went back inside to talk more with Cornelia and Didi.  Cornelia is such a kind, sweet, and friendly woman.  She welcomed us into her home and offered us insight into what weddings are like at their barn and what it's like being a venue owner.  You can tell from talking with her that Cornelia truly loves what she does; she's passionate about the barn and the weddings they host, and she puts her heart into their business.  Time flew by while chatting inside their relaxing and peaceful home - a picturesque farmhouse, just like you'd imagine off a rural road out in the countryside, with the doors propped open, a cool breeze flowing through the house, and delicious cookies waiting for you on the coffee table :-)

I have no doubt that Gordon and Cornelia are remarkable venue hosts, as you can see from their little touches throughout the bridal suite and in the barn how much effort this couple puts into making other couples' wedding days exceptional.  If you're a bride or groom looking for a wedding venue, contact Gordon and Cornelia to meet them and visit their beautiful barn...  They only take a select number of weddings each year though, so don't wait too long to give them a call!

I can't wait to go back and visit Cornelia and Gordon again and to photograph weddings at The Barn at York Hill in the future!

Hillbrook Inn | West Virginia Wedding Venue https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/5/hillbrook-inn-charles-town-wedding-venue-west-virginia-photographer In late April, I visited the Hillbrook Inn & Spa in Charles Town, WV with a potential bride to discuss her upcoming October wedding.  We, of course, chatted about the intimate ceremony and reception she and her fiancé are planning, but we also walked around the gorgeous grounds to see all the beautiful spots for the ceremony and photos.

As soon as I turned off the main road (still a country road, haha) and onto the driveway down to the inn, I fell in love!  It's a drive through fairytale-like woods and down a curvy gravel road, which takes you past the spa and leads to the main house.  Inside the main house is a cozy room that welcomes you with warm lighting, lots of seating, and delicious cookies (I need to get that recipe!) :-)  I was glad I got there before the bride - it gave me time to wander around and snap lots of photos, and I got to see the cutest baby duck that day, too!

The main house has a quaint little sitting room that has a library feel to it, there are lots of dining rooms, and there's a fire pit outside - perfect for evening weddings!  There's even a gigantic chess set across from the main house that will provide tons of entertainment for guests during wedding receptions.

I thought I was in love with the main house...  And then we visited the Hawthorn House...  Oh my word!  How did I not know this place was here?!  It's actually down the road from the main house a couple of miles, but I drive by that road practically every day!  The drive in is through a perfectly manicured lawn that gives the feel of driving to a southern gala where you arrive at a mansion.  It's a beautiful house, but the setting is even MORE beautiful - so picturesque and serene....  The house is surrounded by trees, and you can sit on the back porch and look out towards fields and farm land...  It's just so peaceful.  Right when you walk in the front door, it has an old log cabin look and feel - so cozy.  And the kitchen...  Oh, the kitchen!  It's my dream! :-)  I didn't want to leave...  I wanted to move right in!

The Hillbrook Inn is possibly one of the most beautiful wedding venues I've seen.  It's not just a wedding venue either...  It's a spa, a bed & breakfast, a romantic getaway, or a special date night.  I'll have to ask my husband to take me there some night for what I hear is a delicious dinner! ;-)  I can't wait to visit the Hillbrook Inn again sometime, and I cannot wait to photograph a wedding here someday!!

Jehan & Landon | Barn at York Hill Engagement Photography https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/5/jehan-landon-barn-york-hill-engagement-photography-west-virginia-wedding-photographer Time for the second session from the VAWE Network and my free engagement "mini" session event at The Barn at York Hill!

Jehan and Landon showed up on Sunday with eager smiles.  First they talked with one of the owners, Cornelia, and then I stole them away to take engagement photos!  We started near the fire pit, then walked by the tiny log cabin (which is often turned into a bar where guests can grab a drink during weddings), through the vineyard, down the gravel path, around the beautiful barn, and into the orchards.

From the beginning, these two were laughing and smiling...  Happiness just radiates from them! I've never seen a bride-to-be as glowing as Jehan, when Landon makes her smile :-)  Landon also did an amazing job picking a perfect ring for his fiancé - Jehan's ring is stunning!!

This couple is not only adorable, but they are super sweet and down to earth and I enjoyed chatting with them for a while after the session. Okay, okay - I know what you really want is photos of the lovely couple, so here you go!...

Ashley & Ben | Barn at York Hill Engagement Photography https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/5/ashley-ben-barn-at-york-hill-engagement-photography-west-virginia-wedding-photographer This past Sunday, VAWE Network and I hosted a free engagement "mini" session event at The Barn at York Hill!  I'll be writing a separate blog post about and sharing photos of the beautiful venue later, but for now, let's get to the first mini session...

I say "mini session", but since we only had two couples attend, we pretty much got to do full sessions!  I always enjoy chatting with couples and hearing about their wedding plans, so I was excited to have more time to spend with Ashley and Ben.

They're such a cute couple :-)  They seemed a little shy at first...  Most couples are, haha.  But they warmed up after a little walking around.  Usually the groom-to-be is a little reluctant and takes more time to get comfortable, but Ben was such a good sport and he made Ashley smile and laugh throughout their session.  Ben's sweet gestures and genuine smiles made it evident how much he cares for Ashley...  His kiss atop her head as they're walking down the path is what love is all about... :-)

Lynn & Christian | Garden Wedding in Harpers Ferry! https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/5/lynn-christian-garden-wedding-in-harpers-ferry-west-virginia-wedding-photographer Lynn and Christian got married on a beautiful, sunny spring day, and I'm so honored I got to be a part of it!  I couldn't have asked for a sweeter couple for my first wedding of the season :-)  Lynn contacted me in February and asked about having engagement photos taken...  Initially, they weren't interested in having their wedding photographed, but they still wanted some couples photos.  From her first email, I could tell Lynn was such a sweetheart.  I'm so glad she chatted with me more and they decided to have their small ceremony documented (small, intimate weddings are some of my favorites!).

The day felt more like a family reunion than a high stress wedding day...  The bride and groom chatted with their officiant on the porch before the ceremony started...  Dear family and friends surrounded them in their beautiful backyard garden in historic Harpers Ferry (I'm sure this garden is even more gorgeous once it's in full bloom!)...  They exchanged heartfelt vows and precious rings...  And then they celebrated with a toast and delicious catering inside their home.

Lynn and Christian are such a delightful couple and it was so fun to capture their silly moments and glowing smiles...  You can tell how grateful they are to have found one another.

Congratulations, Mr. & Mrs. Pechuekonis! :-)

2017 Thumbtack Top Pro! https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/1/2017-thumbtack-top-pro I haven't been as active on Thumbtack lately, so I was shocked and honored to receive a Thumbtack Top Pro award for 2017!  I definitely want my photos to be what my clients are most happy with and most passionate about when it comes to my work...  But I like to think my communication, attention to detail, and passion for developing good relationships with my customers is what sets me apart.

I love giving my clients photos they fall in love with and I love when customers become friends :)  I can't wait to see what lies ahead!

Rachel Langerhans Photography - 2016 Year In Review https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/1/rachel-langerhans-photography---2016-year-in-review I can't believe it's 2017...  2016 was a blur, both personally and professionally!  I started pursuing photography as a business in late 2015, so 2016 was my first "real" and full year following my passion and doing photography as a career.  In just one year, I can see leaps and bounds of fine tuning my style and improving my skills.  I ended the year by finally registering as a business in West Virginia - woohoo!  (The actual business aspect of photography is so confusing to me!)  I can't wait to improve even more in 2017!  I'm super excited and honored to have been entrusted with 21 photo sessions last year, which consisted of...

     7 weddings

     5 couples/engagement/anniversary/proposal sessions

     4 family/maternity sessions

     2 boudoir sessions

     2 newborn sessions

     1 senior session

I'm so thankful for all the experience I've gotten, and that I've experienced different types of photography.  Although I love all types of photography (my passion for photography actually started with nature and landscape photography), I've fallen in love with engagement and wedding photography.  My passion for engagement and wedding photography probably has an unfair advantage, since I got married in 2015...  After seeing our photos and having those memories captured forever, I wanted to be able to do *that* for others!

My goal for 2017 is to photograph even more weddings and get my name out there in the wedding industry.  I'm starting the year out by attending The Elite Wedding Expo Maryland in Frederick on January 29, 2017.  I can't wait to meet brides and grooms, chat about their weddings, and show them some of my work!  Another goal I have is to reduce my editing time.  Culling and editing...  The Type A photographer's road block!  I just want the photos I give my clients to be as perfect as possible.  But when I do finally give clients their photos, it makes all the work worth it!  My favorite part of photography is seeing others love and cherish their photos :)

Below is a review of Rachel Langerhans Photography in 2016, summed up by just *one* favorite photo from each session.  I don't know how I'll pick, but here we go...

Cheers to a new year, and meeting not just new clients, but new friends! :)

One of my favorite families to photograph! https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/12/one-of-my-favorite-families-to-photograph-west-virginia-family-photographer I've been shying away from family photo sessions, since I want to focus more on wedding photography...  BUT...  I have a soft spot for the adorableness that is two-year old Emma Wheeler!  Her parents are pretty awesome too ;-) Back in early fall (or maybe it was even still summer), we planned for a family and maternity session in December, when they would be just about two months away from welcoming a new little baby into their family!  We knew that it would most likely be cold, but when the weekend finally came and we got to the park in Leesburg, it was VERY COLD!  Little Emma did SOOO good though!  I wasn't surprised...  She did so well last time too :-)

We ended up spending less time taking photos than we planned, but that's okay, because we still captured a TON of beautiful moments, and plenty of Emma's sweet smile!

This family is definitely one of my favorites!  They're kind, sweet, adorable, and silly...  What's not to love?!  I can't wait to meet Baby Wheeler #2!  :-D

Joey & Hana | Virginia Engagement Photography https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/12/joey-hana-virginia-engagement-photography-virginia-wedding-photographer I met Joey and Hana through my husband, Andrew, who has been friends with Joey since high school.  Joey and Hana have been together for as long as I've known them (over three years now), plus a couple years before that!  They're a cute and quirky couple who are perfect for one another...  Joey finds ways to test Hana's limits, and Hana keeps him in line ;-)

They got engaged about two years ago and are planning a small, intimate wedding.  Joey asked me if I would take couples photos for them, and so of course I said yes!  I was very excited to capture a few silly moments between these two lovebirds.  We went to a park near their place and wandered through that area, then we took a few more photos in the courtyard area of their condo.

I just love seeing these two laugh and smile together!  They are perfect for each other in so many ways, and having fun together is definitely something that comes easy to them!

Joey & Katie | Poplar Springs Wedding Photography https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/12/joey-katie-poplar-springs-wedding-photography-virginia-wedding-photographer Just about one month after Joey asked Katie to marry him, they said "I do" on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.  They had a small, quaint, and romantic ceremony at Poplar Springs in Warrenton, VA.  Joey and Katie are just the sweetest couple, and I'm so honored they asked me to take their wedding photos!  They braved the cold so we could wander around the property to take bride and groom photos before the ceremony.

Once 3 o'clock came, it was time to get married!  Katie's dad walked her down the aisle to where Joey waited for her.  Their ceremony and exchanging of vows were filled with smiles and laughter (and maybe a few tears) as their cousin Josh officiated.  After just a few minutes, they became husband and wife!

While the staff turned over the room for dinner, we took some family photos outside the beautiful Manor House.  We even managed to get a photo of Joey and Katie with all five of their "little groomsmen" (only one out of five little boys crying isn't bad, right??).

Then it was time for the newlyweds to cut their cake and enjoy an elegant dinner with family and friends.

I had so much fun capturing the sweet love between this couple, which you can see with every exchange and glance at one another :)

I wish you a lifetime of happiness, Mr. & Mrs. Brunk!

Family Photos on a Farm https://rachellangerhans.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/11/family-photos-on-a-farm-virginia-family-photographer Temple Hall Farm sounded like a perfect kid-friendly place to take family photos with Felicia, Tyler, and their two adorable girls, Charlotte and Alice!  We met on the last day the farm was open for the season in November, and we had almost summer-like temperatures - it was 80 degrees and sunny!

We saw peacocks and turkeys and chickens and piglets and "moos" ("cows", according to Alice, haha), but the girls were most interested in the little grey kitty that followed them around the farm.

These girls - especially Charlotte - had SO much energy!  Dancing around, chasing the cat, big goofy grins (and some pouty faces too)...  It was hard to keep up!

My favorite moments were catching Charlotte in a pout, and catching Alice with a look of intent concentration on her face as she watched where the kitty went.

We also managed to get a few cute family photos, too...  When the girls felt like smiling at the camera that is :)

Such a fun afternoon exploring the farm and capturing memories for this sweet family!
